  1. one more, while I’m at it. it seems as if the avant-garde lot takes a sort of a liking towards country\blues music – caroliner and beefheart are good examples. but this guy here takes it to a different direction:

bob drake is actually a multi-instrumentalist and he plays in so many great bands – thinking plague (!!!) and 5uu’s for example.
some of his other solo stuff isn’t so country, but is nontheless awesome

but you know what? forget about him, the country band that really deserves the space here is the country teasers.
full blown country with sprikles of punk and noise rock, awefully cynical lyrics sung in a low, lazy, unexpressive voice. examples listed and should be given a listen, this band is a keeper:

    ignore this clip, seriously P:

    and that is quite enough.

  2. the cardiacs may have earned too much of a following to be considered an obscurity, but they DO get to pretty weird places, musically and lyrically also (look up insect hoofs on lassie as an example for this one – absolutely awesome :D ). plus, their stage personas fit them so well :]

notice the characteristics of each of the band members. their “story” supposedly is that they’re inmates in an institution of a sort.
there is a body named “the alphabet business concern” that supposedly runs the cardiacs (ran, as far as I know they are on hiatus till further notice), and consists of this peculiar character, a consultant, who is not a part of the band:

this actually makes me laugh, but It’s probably just me :]
    legendary band, anyways.

  3. I come to you today too meet, Flaming Dragons Of Middle Earth. No it is NOT a power, prog or even a metal act. It is best described as a wtf is this act.

Let me quiote David Keenan here.

Turner Falls’ Flaming Dragons Of Middle Earth. Led by wheelchair-bound ‘band shaman’ Danny Cruz and consisting of a rotating group of non-musicians, psychedelic drop-outs, teenage metallers, kids with Down Syndrome etc, Flaming Dragons play a form of super crude/sophisticated free rock ala The Godz or even a punk-primitive Arkestra but with Cruz’s stunning, oracular vocals giving them a mainline to the freak flag style of prime Captain Beefheart, Roky Erickson and Wasa Wasa-era Broughton. Cruz’s instant lyric inventions are as mind-boggling as your favourite medium while the group lurch around on staggering brokedown rhythms somewhere between early-Sabbath, Robbie Yeats of The Dead C and The Shaggs. Their material ranges from stripped-down raps to lumbering psychedelic rock, as well as free-form freakouts w/lyrics that obsess over murder, bloodshed, astral creeps and, uh, Joni Mitchell… indeed Cruz makes most ‘sound poets’ sound like children’s entertainers. – David Keenan

  4. this is weird sort of the way a Baby Beck album would be weird.
weird or not, their beats blow me away :]

  5. I had no idea where to start with this because I can think of several bands that are not on the list. So I decided to let the ladies go first.

    OvO

OvO is a duo from Italy who play a style of experimental/drone/noise rock, Lead singer Stefania Pedretti has a unique haunting raspy vocal style and she often plays her dreadlocks like a violin.

    [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTvFd50UNzc&w=420&h=315%5D

    Melt-Banana

Another band from Japan, I will be rather surprised if this band has not been mentioned yet. Melt-Banana plays noise rock with punk, pop, and electronic elements, lead singer Yasuko Onuki sings in a fast high pitched sing-song style. Earlier material sounds more like noise rock, and the newer stuff leans more toward spastic pop-punk that is actually rather catchy. I think this video catches their essence well

  6. born at the Spellcaster Lodge by “Bob ‘host of the Drumbuddy video’ Global’ himself, this is a promo and video of the song Knife Fight by the ‘One-Man Rat Pack, A-Capella Massacre’ known as IMAGINE “the” BAND http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wuQkwEPQRfk EYEHATEGOD loves this act.

    Ryo Fujimoto / Humanelectro
Freaking awesome beatboxing japanese guy.. pretty weird, but i like! :)

  8. Aaron Eichler

After seeing Igorrr I would have to suggest a really awesome breakcore artist that just cluster fucks your brain from beginning to end. Venetian Snares . He’s just a solo artist from Canada but he packs a punch.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2tMpwGp4EZc&feature=related

Each album he has sounds unique and different. From classical influences in Rossz Csillag Alatt Született to Songs about my cats, which pretty much sounds like one of his cats walking across a piano in some tracks. There also is a track titled “Look” which is a scantron image of one of his cats .

  9. Kurtis Fulmer

Igorrr reminds me of Canadian band Unexpect.

  10. Dunno if they have been posted before, but I know of several spanish bands that i consider should be in the list. The first one is Manos de Topo, a kind of band made from a singer who sings in a very peculiar way, ridiculously beautiful lyrics, a drummer and a metalophone. I dunno if they follow the weird list criteria, but i just love them. The other band is El Niño Gusano, which give indie rock with mixture of surrealist compositions and writings. Two of my personal fav spanish bands.
Let me know if you accept them

    • Gracias! We do not have any Spanish bands on the list and we should. We’ll check out your suggestions.

  11. Me thinks Little Fyodor easily qualifies as wierd.

  12. Igorrr!
Totally insane breakcore that makes you laugh and cry at the same time. Prepare for baroque melodies mixed with extreme metal drumming, brutal guitar riffs, screams and grunts, techno bass and claps and much more in this blend of virtually ALL sorts of music.
    Enjoy!

    http://www.myspace.com/igorrrrrrrrrr

    • Wow. That is definitely some of the weirdest fucking shit I’ve heard in, like, ever.

    • this is now one of my favorite bands and this is the first place i’ve heard of it. this needs to be on the list!!! i don’t care if it takes longer for bukethead to be put on lol.

  13. Some more of my favourites:

Black Carrot: great name, very strange, but often brilliant, music (http://www.myspace.com/theblackcarrot).

Black Box Recorder, with Luke Haines formerly of The Auteurs, John Moore who served time in the Jesus and Mary Chain, and aloof vocalist Sarah Nixey. It’s the combination of often quite edgy lyrics sung in Nixey’s deadpan style to not particularly edgy indie pop music that makes this bad so weird. They were actually quite successful for a while. Not currently active, as far as I can tell. Listen to “Girl Singing in the Wreckage”, off their first album, “England Made Me”.

Fat Truckers. Much missed moog/synth band. Very individual, but maybe not that weird. Nominated really just for their song “Teenage Daughter”, to which the lyrics are: “Teenage daughter …. teenage daughter … teenage daughter…” and so on.

Gaggle. Album forthcoming from this umpteen-strong girl choir plus electronics/drums. Excellent, and very odd. “I Like Cigarettes” track recommended.

Half Man Half Biscuit. Weird/not weird? John Peel favourites and a very witty band; perhaps that makes them weird. Listen to “Tending the Wrong Grave for 23 Years”, or “Give Us Bubblewrap”, or “Vatican Broadside” (lyric: “The singer out of Slipknot went to Rome to see The Pope / The singer out of Slipknot went to Rome to see The Pope /
The singer out of Slipknot went to rome to see The Pope / And The Pope said to his aide . . /
Who the fucking hell are Slipknot? / Who the fucking hell are Slipknot? / Who the fucking hell are Slipknot? / In relation to me getting out of bed?” Funny? Sure. Strange? Definitely.). Their song “Irk the Purists” is a statement of intent.

Hissanol. Particularly for their songs “Strangled” and “Magog Has Been Delayed”, which are out there on their own.

Joe Meek: for the entire Rod Freeman and the Blue Men “I Hear a New World” album, which has to be one of the most sustained and successful examples of very strange music ever.

King Crimson: stern, complicated, proggy yet punk-like in intensity.

Mary Margaret O’Hara, who made one very strange but fantastic album, “Miss America”, and then pretty much disappeared.

Native Hipsters. “There Goes Concorde Again” enjoyed some inexplicable popularity, thanks I think to John Peel again. See also “Barry the Bouncing Bee”. I’m fond of their stuff, despite it’s unlistenability.

Portsmouth Sinfonia. In 1970 Gavin Bryers got together a load of musically inexperienced, not to say inept, students, and had them pick an instrument. Told to play some well-known pieces of classical music (most of the orchestra could probably hum them, that kind of thing), the resulting recordings are treated as a joke by many, but there’s a theory behind them. It’s important to know, I think, that the orchestra were told to do their best, not to deliberately play badly. So you get a kind of approximation of the original pieces. A very odd effect, but not uncharming. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portsmouth_Sinfonia

Rudimentary Peni. Very very odd and highly detailed pen and ink album/record covers, and even more obsessive song lyrics. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rudimentary_Peni. Perhaps their album “Pope Adrian 37th Psychristiastic” sums them up: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pope_Adrian_37th_Psychristiatric). Great band name, too.

Slapp Happy. The vocals are weird, the music is weird, the lyrics are weird. And they’re great. Listen to their album, “Acnalbasac Noom”.

Stump: really just for the song “Charlton Heston”. It’s on YouTube somewhere.

    • Thanks for all the suggestions, buddy! We still haven’t really had a chance to dive into all of them, but we did decide to add Black Carrot to our latest Facebook poll, so they could get voted into a future Weird Band of the Week spot. You can vote here if you wanna: https://www.facebook.com/questions/376829865704879/

Definitely some other promising shit here, too. We’ll research (read: get drunk and fire up YouTube) and get back at ya.

  14. How about Hugh Metcalfe’s Fuck Off Batman?

  15. Has Judy Dunaway, the Mother of Balloon Music (title of her 2006 album), been flagged yet?

Listen to her “Piece for Tenor Balloon” on YouTube. It’s great.

this must be the wirdest band in the world. they are playing at wacken 2012.
    dødheimsgard equals/= dead-homes-farm.
    norway knows metal!!!

  17. Just read the page on Whitehouse – if you think they are weird and extreme, you might want to look into The Gerogerigegege.

  18. Classic / Idm / Metal
