Peelander-Z’s spring tour is going to melt your fucking face off

Peelander-Z

With their whole Mighty Morphin Power Ramones shtick, I didn’t think Peelander-Z could get any more awesome. Then last year, they transformed from a punk band and into a metal band and bam! More awesomeness. I’ll never underestimate you again, Peelander-Z.

You can see the new hesher-friendly incarnation of Peelander in action starting next month, when they head out on a U.S. tour that is sure to leave a lot of sore necks and torn fishnets in its wake.

Wait, Peelander-Z is now a metal band?

Peelander-metal

Geez, we take one lousy little month off, and the weird band world goes apeshit. Apparently our favorite Japanese action comic punk band Peelander-Z is now a Japanese action comic metal band. What next? Is GWAR going to release an album of big-band standards? (Actually, that might be kind of awesome. Can you imagine Oderus crooning “Under My Skin” while peeling the flesh off a guy in a Frank Sinatra mask? But I digress.)

Anyhoo, yes, it’s true: Last month, Peelander-Z released a new album called Metalander-Z, inspired by the peroxided glory days of hair metal and bands like Def Leppard, Cinderella, Van Halen and Mötley Crüe. Their press release claims they even went so far as to collect ’80s-era guitar amps and other vintage gear, the better to capture that Spandex-and-Flying-V sound. They’ve also scored themselves some sweet new headgear and a new bassist, Peelander Purple. The video for the album’s first single, “Ride On the Shooting Star,” tells the story of how Purple arrived from the Planet Peelander and joined the band. Apparently, they skipped the traditional audition process in favor of shooting each other with energy beams.

Metalander-Z is available now via Bandcamp, Amazon and wherever fine action comic metal records are sold.

If you’ve never been to a Peelander-Z show, a little part of you might be dead inside. But don’t worry, that part can still be resurrected. Yeah, they’re that good.

Wanna play bass in a Japanese action comic punk band? Go to a Peelander-Z show. It could happen!

Peelander-Z in concert

No, that dude in the middle is not in the band. Photo swiped from Vice. Don’t sue us, guys, K?

If you haven’t been to a Peelander-Z show yet, you really need to get off your ass and rectify that situation, stat. Where else can you do a punk-rock conga line, play the band’s instruments and get knocked over by a giant squid riding a unicycle? It’s like Disneyland for drunk hipsters.

If you’re still not convinced, go read our review of their Halloween show here in L.A. last year. We’ll wait. Now, see if you’re lucky enough to be one of the handful of cities that get to play Tokyo to their Godzilla:

03/24 Salt Lake City, UT @ Kilby Court
03/26 San Francisco, CA @ DNA Lounge
03/27 Los Angeles, CA @ The Roxy Theatre
03/28 San Diego, CA @ Soda Bar

04/11 Brooklyn, NY @ Europa Brain-Cave Festival 2013

If they’re not playing your town, don’t sweat it. These guys tour like Willie Nelson after an IRS audit. They’ll be back around soon.

Weird Live Review: Peelander-Z

Peelander-Z and a lucky fan

Sometimes, we here at TWBITW gots to pay the bills. So my full review of Peelander-Z’s pre-Halloween extravaganza at L.A.’s Bootleg Bar can only be read on LA Weekly’s West Coast Sound blog, whose editors were kind enough to compensate me for going to the show in exchange for telling their readers how frickin’ awesome it was. And it was pretty frickin’ awesome, but for all the gory details, you’ll have to visit LAWeekly.com.

Meanwhile, here are a few more photos from Saturday night’s show, plus more Peelander-Z tour dates after the jump. If they’re coming to your town, you really should go see them. How many bands do you know with a unicycle-riding squid?

To which we say: Fuck, yes.

Last time we posted some Peelander-Z tour dates, Jake promised not to miss them if they passed through our beloved City of Angels again. Well, Jake’s gonna have to make good on his promise, because the world’s greatest Japanese Action Punk band is bringing their chaotic, squid-bedeviled live show back to L.A. And they’re playing here the Saturday before Halloween, no less. I might have to break out my silver pants for this one.

Here are the full dates for Peelander’s “Metal Man” fall tour. Sadly, this will be your last chance to see the band with Peelander Red, who is quitting after this tour to teach full-time at Ninja High School. (Here’s his long-winded but touching farewell message.)

Peelander-Z implore you to “Get Glasses”

Nobody likes a squinter. Which is why the latest single from Peelander-Z offers up a valuable public service announcement: “Get Glasses, Dumbass!” (OK, I added the “Dumbass” part. But it’s implied in the song’s rowdy beat.)

In other news from Planet Peelander, the Japanese punk action comic band’s fearless leader, Peelander Yellow, is playing a special acoustic set at Guzu Gallery in Austin, as part of the opening night of his solo art show. And while an acoustic Peelander-Z set kinda sounds like pizza with no crust or sex with no nipple clamps, we’re sure his wacky artwork will more than make up for the lack of electric mayhem.

The Guzu Gallery show happens July 13th. After that, the tireless Peelanderers are playing a few more shows:

07/14 Austin, TX @ Red 7
07/16 Norman, OK @ Opolis
07/18 Birmingham, AL @ The Bottletree w/ Tiger! Tiger!
07/19 Athens, GA @ The Melting Point w/ Tiger! Tiger!
07/20 Wilmington, NC @ Soapbox w/ Tiger! Tiger!
07/21 Virginia Beach, VA @ Jewish Mother Backstage w/ Tiger! Tiger!

Come back to LA, guys! I promise not to get too drunk to leave the house this time.

This Peelander-Z interview is awesome

We’ve always had so many unanswered questions about Japanese action comic punk band Peelander-Z. Like, are they really from outer space? What’s the true meaning of the song “So Many Mike“? How do they keep those costumes looking so lemony fresh?

Well, we may never know the answer to that last question, but thanks to the good people over at Performer magazine, we now know that they are, in fact, not really from outer space, and that the song “So Many Mike” is about how Peelander Yellow knows too many American dudes named Mike. Those and many other mysteries are solved in this highly entertaining interview Performer did with P-Yellow, in which Peelander’s fearless leader admits, in slightly broken English, to ripping off their look from the Power Rangers, and compares his band to tuna fish. You’ll just have to read the interview to find out what the fuck he’s talking about. (Nice tease, right? You’re welcome, Performer magazine.)

The interview inspired us to check out Peelander-Z’s cover of “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,” featuring one of the band’s newer members, Peelander Pink, on lead vocals. The sound quality on the clip below isn’t great, but the synchronized dance moves make up for it.

Weird bands at SXSW

Sadly, Jake and I are sitting out this year’s South by Southwest Music Conference—by choice, NOT because Jake was banned for life from every bar in Austin after what happened last year (though that rumor persists—spread mostly, I suspect, by Jake). We’re just lazy and broke. We’ll have to experience it vicariously through all your drunken tweets and blurry Instagram photos. Thanks in advance.

Happily, however, several weird bands are making the trek to SXSW this year, and since Jake and I won’t be there to cheer them on ourselves, we strongly encourage you to pick up our slack. We guarantee that each and every one of them will rock your skinny jeans off, or your money back.*

Delhi 2 Dublin (that’s them in the photo above—cute, ain’t they?)
3/14 @ Copa (217 Congress Ave.), 1:00AM (official showcase)

MC Frontalot
3/13 @ Flamingo Cantina (515 E. 6th St.), 1:00AM (official showcase)
3/17 @ The Grackle (1700 E. 6th St.), 2:55PM (Peelander-Fest)

Metalachi
3/15 @ BandPage HQ (604-606 E. 7th St.), 8:00PM (Austin Rox party)

Peelander-Z
3/17 @ The Grackle (1700 E. 6th St.), 6:25PM (Peelander-Fest)
3/17 @ Treasure Island (413 E. 6th St.), 1:00Am (official showcase)

Sxip Shirey
3/17 @ Creekside at Hilton Garden Inn (500 N. I-35), 9:00PM (official showcase)

I’m sure I’m missing a few shows, both from these artists and others. If you know of any good ones, please loop us in.

Damn, now I kinda wish we were going.

*We can’t actually give you your money back.

New Peelander-Z single: “Star Bowling”

Add to FacebookAdd to DiggAdd to Del.icio.usAdd to StumbleuponAdd to RedditAdd to BlinklistAdd to TwitterAdd to TechnoratiAdd to Yahoo BuzzAdd to Newsvine

A new tune from our favorite Japanese action comic punk band, Peelander-Z, graced our inbox over the weekend. It’s called “Star Bowling” and it’s from the band’s new album, Space Vacation, which is coming this April on Chicken Ranch Records. “Star Bowling” is less spazzy, more bouncy than previous Peelander joints—it even includes a pretty violin interlude that’s more like something you’d hear from Arcade Fire or the Polyphonic Spree. But we’re digging it.

A video for “Star Bowling” directed by the Zellner Brothers is coming soon. In the meantime, check out the track below and tell us what you think.
