Three hikers died when they fell through a fissure while climbing the volcano antisana50 kilometers southeast of Quito. Among the victims are Luis Almachi33 years old, Tatiana Chiguano35, and Dayra Izafrom 10
The Quito Fire Department rescued the lifeless bodies at more than 4,000 meters above sea level. All the losses have been painful for the families and for the mountain athletes, but the death of Dayra Known among climbers for having reached the summits of the Cotopaxi and of the cayambe at the age of 10 years.
Dayra started with her aunt Tatiana Chiguano, another victim of the tragedy, who started climbing just over a year ago, although she also saw the example of her mother, Catarina Chiguano. Tatiana took Dayra to the Edward Whymper Refuge in Chimborazo and then headed to the frozen lagoon of Carihuairazo.

They made the first ascent together on January 26 to attack at an altitude of 4,463 meters. Last April, Dayra crowned the Cotopaxi at an altitude of 5,897 meters. Tatiana chose the climbing team that traced a route to climb Cotopaxi through three peaks: Rucu Pichincha of 4,784 masl, the imbabura of 4,609 masl and the tungurahua of 5,023 masl.
At first, Tatiana was worried that it would be a very demanding trip for Dayra and she planned to go alone, but the girl insisted and convinced her aunt. Both agreed to go step by step until they decided whether or not they would make the summit difficult.
After completing the three summits, Dayra, Tatiana and other climbers and guides from Amaru, a group of mountaineers, was heading to Cotopaxi. They arrived at the shelter on April 9.

They started walking in the middle of the night. She and the guide were at Dayra’s rope party. Lenin Almachi. According to the website of the Hiking for All Foundation, mountaineering commonly uses the roped method, which refers to the use of ropes to achieve community or group cohesion for safety purposes. However, this method can be used on less demanding courses where the rope is tied in an imaginary way to maintain the feeling of teamwork. Last April, Lenin wrote about Dayra on his Facebook account that she is a “unbreakable girl”.
Dayra did not want to stop dreaming of climbing more mountains and she set herself the challenge of reaching Cayambe, the third highest mountain in the country at 5,790 meters, a smaller challenge, but more technical and demanding than the summit of Cotopaxi.
According to decades of mountaineering records, Dayra is the youngest person to climb the Cayambe volcano. He also holds the same mark when climbing Illinizas Sur from a height of 5,245 meters.

Dozens of climbers mourn the death of the little girl and the rest of the members of the sports team after the tragedy. Ecuador is surrounded by volcanoes and mountains that form an impenetrable and magical Andean wall. Some people fear them and others stand up to them. One of them was Dayra Iza who, when she started her way to the top of the highest mountain in the country, she had no other desire than to continue climbing.
Dayra remembers saying that she felt at peace during the ascents. There she had time to think about her mother, who also climbed mountains and was her main inspiration for the trip. Her challenge was to do the entire Pichincha route, climbing four mountains one after another. In one of them, Della’s eyes fell on the Cotopaxi volcano just visible in the distance. Little Dayra dreamed of climbing Chimborazo, Sangay and Antisana. It was on this last hill where she died last Sunday on this sad Christmas Eve.
