ASUU holds NEC meeting in Calabar on half salary

The University Academic Staff Union is scheduled to hold a quarterly meeting of the National Executive Council at the University of Calabar on Sunday.

A member of the NEC confirmed this to our correspondent on Saturday in Abuja.

“There is a quarterly NEC and it is for the fourth quarter. Many issues will come up and definitely, the issue of withheld and amputee wages will come up.

The union’s national president, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, could not immediately be reached for comment on the matter.

PUNCH reports that after ASUU called off its strike on October 14, teachers were paid a ‘mutilated’ salary for the month and wages for the remaining months were withheld.

The federal government said the pay was prorated as the union only called off its strike two weeks into the month. But ASUU protested, accusing the government of neglecting the work of academics.

Despite the protests and the intervention of the speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, the executive arm of the government has insisted that it will not change the bases to implement the ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy.

The government’s decision to withhold teachers’ salaries sparked a series of protests across the country with some branches of the union calling for the dismissal of education minister Adamu Adamu and labor and employment minister Chris Ngige.

However, the union confirmed that its members received full salaries for the month of November 2022.
