Hobart: The grass fields of Bellerive Oval saw a thrilling defense from the home team Hobart Hurricanes. The Tasmanian team pulled off a Christmas miracle by defeating the Gades by 8 runs. The ‘Canes have now defended the second lowest score in BBL history.
Hurricanes won the toss and elected to bat first. James Neesham led off the batting with D’Arcy Short. However, the constant loss of one winger made things challenging for the Tasmanians. Captain Nathan Ellis and James Neesham shot 28 of 19 and 21 of 18 respectively. Apart from them, no one played much of a good performance. West Indian spin master Akeal Hossein and D Moody each took three wickets. Andre Russell took two while Mujeeb and Tom shared the rest.
Chasing 122, the Renegades lost crucial wickets to Nic Maddinson on the second ball of the match. They were 41/4 when Finch went down, dashing hopes of a win. The Gades latched on to Dre Russ, who followed Finch for a short time.
Will Sutherland managed to win some quality races by holding the tightrope. The all-rounder scored 40 runs off 29 balls, including four limits. He kept a strong fort until the end. The Gades had a fighting chance with Will in the crease. He seemed ready to go through 122, but missed. Joel Paris stole the show by taking him out and finishing the Gades tickets.
Riley Meredith was awarded Man of the Match for his brilliant bowling efforts. He collected three wickets from 12 runs. He scalped the crucial Sam Harper, Tom Rogers and Andre Russell. Shadab Khan also picked up three. Meanwhile, spin wizard Patrick Dooley and pacer Paris each shared two.
With the win, Hobart jumped to fifth position. They have wasted 4 points in four games. Meanwhile, despite the Renegades suffering their first defeat, they remain in second position in the table with six points.
