BMW R nineT: BMW’s retro-styled roadster

BMW Motorrad has a range of R nineT retro-styled roadsters that are quite popular with custom-builders because of its modular nature. The R nineT harks back to R motorcycles of the yesteryear which were famously known for their boxer-twin engine layout, and are still celebrated in custom-builder circles. Bikes from this range are powered by a 1170cc air-cooled boxer twin engine that produces 108bhp and 116Nm of torque. All the bikes from the range share a four-part frame that includes a mainframe, engine and a transmission unit as a stressed member and two rear-section sub-frames. BMW sells only two versions of the R nineT in India: the standard R nineT and the R nineT Scrambler.
Engine
Packed neatly within the frame is a 1170cc, twin-cylinder engine that produces 108bhp and 119Nm of torque. The motor is air/oil-cooled and comes paired to a 6-speed manual transmission. The BMW R nineT is BSIV-compliant.
Specifications
The R nineT is a blend of modern design cues and retro styling bits. It’s a retro-modern cafe racer that is targeted at buyers who aren’t too keen about having a sports bike. It also looks quite elegant. The front-end looks rather straight forward and simple with that circular headlight, while the side looks sporty with the boxer engine jutting out and those dual exhausts too. Even the wire-spoke alloys look beautiful. The large tank is muscular and swoops into the rider’s seat under which lies silver support. A pillion’s seat is optional. The instrument cluster is a dual analogue pod unit that features the speedometer, tachometer, two digital displays that feature a clock and gear position indicator. In terms of dimensions, the R nineT is 2220mm in length, 890mm in width and 1265mm in height. There’s a great, long spread of power with a strong top end and lots of torque, so much so that it’ll top out at 160-170kph. The bike’s rumbling exhaust matches the design of the motorcycle. It even bubbles, pops and bangs on the overrun and bellows at higher speeds. Throttle response is shockingly instantaneous and power delivery is linear. At 222kgs, the bike’s weight is manageable. The ground clearance, on the other hand, is 185mm, while the bike has a wheelbase of 1476mm and a seat height of 785mm.
Mileage
The BMW R nineT has a fuel tank capacity of 18 litres. In terms of mileage, the bike is capable of returning 18kmpl by ARAI, in BSIV guise.
Mechanical Parts
The R nineT is a comfortable bike to sit on. You tend to get very comfortable in the saddle. You sit at a perfect height allowing you to have a look around at the traffic. The seating posture is good and the boxer’s low centre of gravity provides great balance at slow speeds. And those horizontally positioned cylinders don’t come in the way of riding through lanes. The bike is quick in a straight line and loves squatting down into fast, curvy bends. The steering may not be the quickest, but it is very planted while leaning on its sides. The front-end feels great, thanks to the good suspension setup. It loves attacking corners at high speeds. Ground clearance is great and the bike is surefooted in a straight line. At the front, the bike rides on USD telescopic forks, while the rear gets a single-sided swing arm suspension. As far as the chassis is concerned, it is built around a four-section frame. The R nineT runs on 120/70 ZR17 tyres at the front and 180/55 ZR17 tyres at the rear. Retardation duties are taken care of by disc brakes at the front and at the rear.
Features
The bike comes loaded with a slew of features like a twin analogue pod unit, wire-spoke wheels, LED taillight, digital trip meter, ABS, optional pillion’s seat, engine kill switch and clock.
Colours
The BMW R nineT is available in one shade only like Blackstorm Metallic. Blackstorm Metallic is certainly a colour that is bound to be a favourite among young riders.
