Court convicts Labor Party’s Doyin Okupe and gets 2-year prison term for money laundering


An Abuja-based Federal High Court has convicted the director general of the Labor Party’s Presidential Campaign Council, Doyin Okupe, for violating the Money Laundering Act.

Okupe was found guilty of receiving the sum of N240 million from the former National Security Adviser (NSA), Colonel Sambo Dasuki.

okupe was sentenced the on Monday by Judge Ijeoma Ojukwu to two years in prison in the case brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), who claimed that the defendant violated the Money Laundering Law.

Justuce Ijeoma Ojukwu, declared that Okupe was guilty of 26 of the 59 charges against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in the offense of money laundering, citing that the 26 charges attracted a prison sentence of two years. each and would run at the same time

Okupe was given an option of N500,000 on each of the charges, amounting to N13 million, due by 4:30pm on Monday.

Okupe was found guilty of contravening sections 16 (1) and (2) of the Money Laundering Act, for accepting cash payments without going through a financial institution, above the limit permitted by law.
