Yankuzo district chief in Zamfara state’s Tsafe local government area, Kogo Hamza, who was shot by bandits, died while receiving treatment at hospital.
Hamza was shot several times by bandits along Tsafe Yankuzo Road and rushed to the Federal Medical Center, Gusau, where he died on Saturday night.
Yankuzo is the hometown of the feared bandit leader, Ado Aliero, who was declared a wanted by the military.
An indigenous man from the area, Audu Mohammed, told The PUNCH that the district chief was attacked by bandits along the Tsafe Yankuzo road on Saturday when he was returning to his domain after a meeting with the Emir of Tsafe.
Mohammed said: “The bandits wanted to kidnap him, but he refused to stop.
“They chased him and opened fire on his car, where he suffered six gunshot wounds.”
“He was rushed to Tsafe General Hospital and then transferred to Gusau Federal Medical Center where he finally died on Saturday night.”
Efforts to get comment from the state police command failed as the spokesman, SP Mohammed Shehu, could not be reached by phone.
