The game, marred by English antics in CaliphIt didn’t thrill fans as one would have thought. The score remained 0-0 for almost 3/4 of the match. The Dutch created chances in the early starts of the match. Cody Gakpo engaged Mendy with a challenging shot in just the 4th minute. Additionally, The Orange led all of the first halves with multiple chances in the first twenty-five minutes. The game remained goalless and rather boring for the first half and the 30 minutes of the second half.
In the 84th minute, Frenkie de Jong directed a pass into the box and the PSV striker Gakpo slid it past Mendy to break the tie. In extended 9-minute extra time, Klaasen’s F added a goal to the goal tally. The Dutch got past the Senegal defense breaking them twice in the last minutes of the game. The Dutch, although they got the three magic points, did not sweep Senegal as expected. There were dents in the team, since they did not know how to turn chances into goals. Not only did the eleven lack form, but also the spirit of the Netherlands.
The Netherlands won the match, but in terms of statistics, Senegal is not that bad. The percentage of possession is split almost evenly between Senegal and the Netherlands. Furthermore, the Senegalese defense must be congratulated for their precise and brilliant tackling.
The Dutch will go through to the next round with a happy smile. They have three points and are first in the group. Senegal is their toughest nemesis in the group. If the Maroons and La tri don’t pull off miracles, the Netherlands will break into R16 quite easily.
