Who was Herbert Volney?
Herbert Volney was a famous politician and government figure of Trinidad and Tobago. He was previously associated with the United National Congress, but later launched his own “We The People” party in 2017.
Volney graduated with a law degree in 1976 and was admitted to Hugh Wooding Law School. In 1994, he became a Justice of the Supreme Court of Trinidad and Tobago and served until 2010. He was also a member of Parliament.

Volney also served as Minister of Justice in Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s cabinet after leaving his post as a high court judge. Later, he also participated in the general elections under the banner of the People’s Association. In 2013, he was fired amid the Section 34 scandal.

At the age of 69, Mr. Volney’s heart could not keep up and he passed away earlier today. He was rushed to hospital, but doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

People who have worked with Herbert Volney are paying tribute following his sudden passing today.
“I have good memories with Mr. Volney. I had the privilege of working with Mr. Volney. I was the head of government affairs while he served in the government. I was always amazed by his sense of humor,” said Oropouche MP Dr. Roodal Moonilal.
He added: “He was a colorful character. But I saw in him a deep love for his country. We always kept in touch through social media. I am extremely saddened and we are grateful for his service to the country.”
“Always quick-witted, he often portrayed himself as the custodian of Catholic values in the cabinet and representing those of mixed heritage, as he was equally proud of his Dominican roots,” wrote Dr. Devant Maharaj, another Volney’s colleague.
Senator and Minister for Agriculture Avinash Singh also expressed his condolences on the death of Herbert Volney. He wrote:
“We sat in opposite political parties but we were always cordial. Lately, I have been very interested in my production farm position on my parents’ farm. I invited him to visit just a few weeks ago. May his soul find eternal peace and his family find strength at this time.
