Gareth Southgate will take time to think about his future as he grapples with conflicting emotions after admitting the past 18 months have been difficult in charge. Southgate’s future hung in the balance when Harry Kane scored one penalty and missed another against the reigning champions. France in a 2-1 quarter-final defeat in Qatar, on top of that, England also lost the Euro 2020 final against Italy.
However, with that 2022 World Cup loss, England once again lost hope of taking the World Cup home after their last triumph in 1966.
The 52-year-old has a contract until the next Euro 2024, but wants to make sure he has the energy to compete and that the decision is the best one for the team.
What did Gareth Southgate say?
“When I’ve been to the last few tournaments, my emotions have been hard to think through in the weeks that followed,” Southgate said.
“It took so much energy from you and you have so many things on your mind.
“I want to make the right decision either way because it has to be the right one to go again, or the right one not to go again and I don’t think tonight is the time to make a decision like that.
He further added: “Neither are the next few days really.”
Tell him the future looks bright for England, adding: “Yes, look, I have found large parts of the last 18 months difficult.
“For all that I have loved about the last few weeks, I still remember how things have been for 18 months.
“The said and the written, the night of the Wolves.
“There are a lot of things in my head that are really conflicting right now, so I want to make sure that if it’s the right thing to say, I definitely have the energy to do it.
Southgate has also expressed his memories of previous defeats England suffered under his reign.
Gareth Southgate said: “I don’t think I’m over the last one, but this feels a bit different because when we reflect on what we’ve done I’m not sure what more we could have done or given. ,”.
“I think we’ve had a very good performance against a top-tier team, which I think was a significant psychological step for those players.
“There are some young players there especially, where the step we have to take is to have that belief and that confidence in those big games.
“I’ve been involved in nights where we’ve played the best teams and we’ve been on defense for most of the game and dominated.
“I know France are a bit more of a counter-attack, so it’s a bit different from a possession team that can pin you down.
“We wanted to be bold in the tournament and I think we went toe to toe with them and, yeah, the players should be really proud of what they’ve done.”
Southgate believes that England have performed well and will continue to improve.
