How Strong Telecom Infrastructure Boosts Nigeria’s Entertainment Industry —Danbatta

Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) Executive Vice President Professor Umar Danbatta has said that the existence of a strong telecommunication infrastructure in Nigeria has helped the country’s entertainment industry.

According to him, the Nigerian entertainment industry has gone global due to heavy leverage on digital platforms.

Making this point at the 10th Annual Branding and Marketing Conference in Lagos, Danbatta noted that content creation and consumption have grown around the telecommunications infrastructure.

Social Media Factor: The NCC chief claimed that Nollywood is one of the largest film industries in the world thanks to the internet and digital platforms that allow Nollywood content to be viewed worldwide.

  • “Nigerian music stars are in high demand around the world due to their popularity and brand recognition on social media. We should add that many of these global superstars emerging from Nigeria shot to stardom by leveraging Caller Tunes and other mobile content platforms to grow their brands and huge online followings.”
  • “Let me assure you that the NCC will continue to aggressively push for the deployment and smooth operation of infrastructure to drive new digital technologies for the benefit of all sectors of our economy. We look forward to Nigerian brands continuing to leverage a strong infrastructure to increase their value and ensure our country reaps the maximum benefit from ongoing digital transformation efforts.” he told the conference.

Digital economy: Danbatta stressed that the NCC, in carrying out its mandate, has been relentless in creating an atmosphere conducive to the deployment and adoption of new technologies, and the government has taken a strong position that the country should harness digital technologies to grow the economy.

  • As such, he said that the development of policies such as the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy (NDEPS) 2020-2030 and the Nigerian National Broadband Plan (NNBP) 2020-2025, which the NCC and other agencies and partners are implementing assiduously, further boost the country’s digital economy.
  • Danbatta revealed that the Commission is currently reviewing the licenses and frameworks for fixed broadband to bring them up to date with current challenges and make them more effective as part of the critical initiatives implemented by the NCC that are already bearing fruit.
