Each home has, for sure, experienced the many issues that cause inconvenience to the family. One of these irritating problems is the blocked drains. To avoid these problems in the future, one should be aware of what needs to be avoided and which actions need to be done. Here is a list of common problems and causes of blocked drainage:
Causes of Blocked Drains in Your Sink
- Oil, Grease, Fat
Some, up until now, have no idea that pouring cooking oils, greases, and fats to their sink can cause trouble and a problem. These oil, greases, fats and even pan drippings can clog and stick in your pipe because once these have cooled down, it will solidify. Hence, if you use your sink, most likely, the water will not successfully run down in the drain but rather will occupy the space of your sink. It will eventually, worst-case scenario, overflow in your sink area.
Instead of pouring these oils, greases, fats, and sauces down the sink, properly dispose of it through putting them up into a sealed container and turn it into the rubbish bin instead. Take note as well, before washing pots, pans, and dishes that accumulated oils and greases, to wipe them first with dry paper towels and then throw them away into your rubbish bin.
- Leftover Food
After eating, there are usually leftovers, but they are instantly thrown into the sink. These pieces of leftovers can go down to the drain of your sink and can cause clog in your pipe once it has piled up. To avoid clogging your sink with food remnants or your leftover, use a strainer drain so it will just pile at the top and will not go directly down your pipe. Strainers are put above your drainer, and these have holes that are small enough to hinder big materials from going down your drain.
You can collect all of the leftovers by removing the drainer because it is handy that it can carry these materials, but you can also get them manually. Tea leaves and coffee grounds are also needed to watch over because once it has gone down to your drain, it will be a problem for the reason they do not break down. Another you can do is set up a compost bin that is exclusively allotted for food waste.
Causes of Blocked Drains in Your Toilet
Hair falls are inevitable, especially if one is taking a shower. These are common for women because they have longer hair. It can accumulate in the bathroom sink, bathtub, and even the bathroom sinks, causing stubborn clogs. To avoid this particular circumstance, you can use a strainer in every drain in the bathroom. You can remove them after taking your shower and put it in your designated trash bin inside your bathroom along with other garbage.
- Soap
Soap can contribute to the reason for the blocked drain in the bathroom. You might not be careful and slide the bar soap out of your hand and it might fall into the toilet. Soap residue or soap scum can also accumulate over time and can combine with other materials that can contribute to slow drainages, such as hair and dirt.
- Sanitary Napkin, Diaper, Wipes, Toys
The only things your toilet can flush down are human waste and toilet paper. The material of toilet paper is easily dissolved in water, but if the amount to be flush is excess, it can clog too. The rest is simply impossible, such as women’s sanitary napkins, tampons, diapers, and wipes.
These cannot be flush down for a reason since they are large enough and cannot be dissolved in water even for hours and days, so avoid it at all cost. Watch out as well if you have a kid at your home, the toys that sometimes they bring with them at time of their baths can accidentally fall in the bowl.
