Acclaimed red ball specialist Joe Root is reflecting on his image to enter the latest edition of IPL. The former English test captain is yet to appear in one of cricket’s biggest tournaments. Joe Root passed the captaincy baton to Ben Stokes earlier this year. And now that he is back in the racing league, Root is overseeing the possibility of finally entering the IPL.
2022 has been a great one for Root, who reached 10,000 races in the Test format. A lot of that had to do with Root taking the pressure of the captaincy off his head. Post that, Root along with Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum have seen England conquer new heights in Test cricket. The current timeline looks like the golden era of English cricket with the ODI and T20 World Cup on its laps. And at a time when English players like jose butler Y liam livingstone are all the rage in IPL, Root seems appropriate to participate in the league.

Joe Root open to the idea of joining IPL 2023
Leaning into the idea, Root said: “I would certainly debate entering the IPL draw quite seriously and I hope to get some exposure in that tournament. It would be great to get involved in the continued enormity of each game and how much it means.” By the way, the IPL 2023 mini auction is scheduled for December 23 this year. The 10 teams have announced their retentions for the upcoming season. And later the sides will take the final form with their bids in the auction. In addition, Ben Stokes is also expected to put his name up for auction. And Sam Curran is another strong contender on the roster, returning to the franchise after an injury-laden hiatus. The all-rounder is sure to be expensive at auction due to his latest World Cup performance.

IPL is a chance to relive Root’s T20 career?
Notably, Joe Root, despite being England’s best in Tests, is not part of the shorter format team. Root is yet to return to the national team for the post-2019 T20 format. And giving IPL a chance is his move to hone his skills for the shorter format of the men’s game. “I have no thoughts or feelings of retirement or slowing down or playing fewer formatssaid Root.
“If anything, I feel a little more freedom with my time. I always used to rest for T20 and I feel like I strayed away from the format because I hadn’t played enough. You may feel like you are falling behind a bit. Now the next two years might be a good time to explore playing that format a little more and see how far I can take that side of my game.” He concluded.
