Nigerian teachers can now seek employment with UK schools (Apply here)
Eligible teachers in Nigeria can apply to work in schools in the United Kingdomcourtesy of a program of the department of education.
To stand a chance, applicants will need to have Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), a qualification awarded by the Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA).
The UK department for education listed Nigeria among the predominantly African and Asian countries that are now eligible to apply.
Teachers in Ghana, Hong Kong, India, Jamaica, Singapore, South Africa, Ukraine and Zimbabwe, as well as Nigeria, are expected to start applying in February 2023.
“This change is part of the launch of a new service for applying for QTS in England,” the notice says.
“From February 1, 2023, teachers in all eligible countries will need to demonstrate that they meet a consistent set of criteria for the award of QTS. Over time, this route will open up to qualified teachers from all countries outside of the UK.
“This will ensure that all non-UK teachers receiving QTS are held to the same high standards, while increasing opportunities for highly qualified teachers wherever they train.”
Elaborating, the UK government said a minimum of two years’ teaching experience is needed to be eligible for qualified teacher status.
“To apply for the QTS-only assessment, you do not need a formal teacher training qualification. However, you must have: a minimum of 2 years of teaching experience; a first degree (bachelor’s degree) from a UK or non-UK university an English language qualification that is to the same standard as a grade 4 GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education); a mathematics qualification which is the same standard as a grade 4 GCSE for teaching children aged 3-11 in primary school and a physics, chemistry or biology (science) qualification which is the same standard as a grade GCSE 4,” the ad says.
