Another Weird Band Poll is in the books here at Weird Band HQ, and the band poppin’ bottles this time is from right here in our hometown of Los Angeles. So give an imaginary high-five to L.A.Drones! I wasn’t shouting, by the way…their name has an exclamation point at the end. Just thought I’d clear that up.

L.A.Drones! (not shouting, I swear) are a synth duo who perform wearing black bandit masks because one version of their name, “ladrones,” means “thieves” in Spanish. And because, as they told us, “we steal samples from the music we like.” I thought that was pretty much every synth band these days, but maybe L.A.Drones! are more thievish than most.

In another version of their name, it means “Los Angeles drones,” which could be a reference to the droning sound of their music, or the fact that we Angelenos increasingly live in a police surveillance state. Seriously, the cops here have drones. Which are supposedly not in use at the moment, but if there’s one thing every halfway intelligent American just learned in the wake of all that shit that went down in Ferguson, it’s that we should not trust our local police forces with all their new high-tech gadgets. You may as well give a box of fireworks to a bunch of 10-year-old boys and say, “Now you be sure to find a grown-up and get permission before you light these.”

Anyway, where was I? Oh, right. L.A.Drones! So far, the duo of Vulcanito and Tormentas Gonzalez has only released one track, an ass-shaking little jam called “Horrible Dreams,” which you can watch in the performance clip below and also buy on Bandcamp for less than a cup of gas station coffee.

When we asked if they had any other songs, Vulcanito explained that L.A.Drones! really has to be experienced live. “Horrible Dreams” is just the first part of a 45-minute “capsule” of music called “The Dreamlike World of the Midnight Walker,” which they never perform the same way twice, and any versions of it they release online will just be recorded live in the studio. They’re working on other “capsules” of music, each of which will be played at a different BPM. “Midnight Walker” is at 127 BPM, apparently.

Here’s a live clip of the second part of “The Dreamlike World of the Midnight Walker,” which is called “Give Up.” Musically, they’re not the weirdest band we’ve ever featured, maybe. But I do dig that their music is kind of freeform and dancey at the same time, and the whole concept of an electronic act that never plays anything the same way twice. Some of the “live” dance music acts Andy’s dragged me to over the years should really take a page from that playbook.

So congrats again to L.A.Drones! for winning the poll. I believe that makes them the first L.A. band ever to win a Weird Band Poll. About damn time somebody represented!

Weird of the Day: Doris Norton, “Psychic Research”

We first learned about the pioneering synthesizer work of Doris Norton when we did a post last month about the Italian esoteric prog-rock band Jacula, for whom she played keyboards in the early ’70s. Turns out she went on to create even weirder and more cutting-edge music as a solo artist, always testing the limits of the available technology to create never-before-heard sounds. She even got sponsored by Apple in the early ’80s to create some of the first music produced using personal computers.

Over the course of the ’80s, her music evolved into what we recognize today as synth-pop and early techno. But her first three solo albums, Underground (1980), Parapsycho (1981) and Raptus (1981), featured some of the craziest synth experiments of her time (or any time, for that matter). Among other things, she tinkered with translating biorhythms, brainwaves and “psychic energy” into synthesizer music—hence the title of the track below, “Psychic Research,” from Parapsycho. (It’s not the full track, but since Parapsycho was reissued last year, all unauthorized tracks from that album seem to have been pulled from YouTube.)

Weird of the Day: Circuit Breaker, “Worm 7 (2nd Version)”

We’re journeying to rainy old Manchester, England today, where a pair of brothers, Peter and Edward Simpson, are channeling early ’80s post-punk/darkwave/synth-rock gloom under the name Circuit Breaker. For fans of Suicide or any Joy Division song that isn’t “Love Will Tear Us Apart,” their stuff isn’t super-weird, but it does take some unexpected twists and turns, especially on “Worm 7,” an almost black-metal-like dirge from their most recent release, a five-song EP called TV12.

Weird of the Day: Viranesir, “Not Alone”

I don’t think we’ve ever featured any music from Turkey on this blog. That’s fucked up. I went to Turkey once and it was awesome. So let’s get them in on the weirdo action right now.

This Viranesir project is the work of a guy named Emir Toğrul and it’s basically a cross between noise rock and doom metal, but played entirely on drums and synthesizers. It’s like listening to Wolf Eyes on acid. Here’s the video for “Not Alone,” the lead track off the project’s third album, Shoot On Mom’s Corpse. Which is like the greatest album title ever, until you find out Viranesir’s previous album was called Kill Your Repulsive Child, which is ever greater.

Shout-out to Merdümgiriz, who is both the insanely chaotic drummer for Viranesir and the guy who emailed this project to us. Not sure how you found us, Merdümgiriz, but I’m glad you did.

You can stream Shoot On Mom’s Corpse on Bandcamp or better yet, buy the damn thing. It’s only $4 to download the whole 49-minute album. I’m pretty sure it’s worth at least that much just to have the title Shoot On Mom’s Corpse show up in your iTunes occasionally.

Weird of the Day: Polysics, “Mega Over Drive”

Reader Aaron calls Polysics the “bastard Japanese offspring of DEVO.” Polysics themselves call their music “technicolor pogo punk.” We just call is awesome. Next party I go to, I plan to dance by flailing my arms around my head like I’m fending off an invisible swarm of bees, just like the girls in this video. Though I won’t look as cute in a Mylar tutu.

Hey, remember last month, when we told you that our favorite experimental/Nintendocore French band Pryapisme was releasing a collection of 8-bit tracks and remixes on limited-edition (and Satan-endorsed, judging from the cover art) pink cassette? Well, as the Feb. 3rd release date for that set, Blastbit Rococollider, draws nigh, we’re finally getting a little taste of the chiptune insanity that’s in store for us. Here’s one of the EP’s six tracks, “Lesbian Bordello (Warp Zone).” Hang on to your joysticks.

As previously mentioned, Blastbit Rococollider will be released in an extremely limited run of just 100 cassettes, and it appears that no pre-orders will be accepted. So bookmark this page on the Apathia Records website and on Feb. 3rd, be prepared to hit the refresh button like you’re mowing down lesbian zombies in a post-apocalyptic bordello. Good luck!

Pryapisme to release 8-bit EP “Blastbit Rococollider” on limited-edition pink cassette tapes

French Nintendocore rockers Pryapisme must love the ’80s. Not only are they releasing a new limited-edition EP only on pink cassette tape, they’re filling entirely with 8-bit music—you know, that tinny, lo-fi electronic stuff that sounds like two Atari 2600’s getting freaky. It’s called Blastbit Rococollider and appears to contain 8-bit remixes/remakes of tracks from their first two albums, Hyperblast Super Collider and Rococo Holocaust. They’re only making 100 copies, but if I can get my hands on one, I plan to break out my old canary-yellow Sport Walkman and make it the soundtrack to a weekend-long binge-playing session on my Asteroids emulator. Don’t judge me.
