ATP has found its no. younger year-end. 1, courtesy of Rafael Nadal crashing into the ATP Finals. Current ATP World sensation Carlos Alcaraz is set to end the ATP season as No. 1. The Spanish teenager will be no. 1 in the history of the ATP rankings at the recorded age of 19 years, 214 days. The record was previously held by Lleyton Hewitt who accomplished the feat in 2001 at the age of 20 years and 275 days.
Rafael Nadal, who was participating in the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin, Italy, collided with Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime. The loss put the final nail in his exit from the tour after his earlier loss to Taylor Fritz. The loss to Felix knocked Nadal out of the semifinal. And while Carlos Alcaraz missed the final due to an abdominal injury, Nadal’s departure ultimately made him the youngest year-end No. 1.

Carlos Alcaraz becomes the youngest year-end No.1 in the ATP Rankings

However, abdominal injury sidelined Alcaraz from the Paris Masters tournament when he withdrew midway through the quarterfinal match against Holger Rune. The retirement, in turn, put Stefanos Tsitsipas and Rafael Nadal in position to dethrone Alcaraz as No. 1 in the ATP Rankings. But Tsitsipas withdrew in the first match and Rafael Nadal has now ended his 2022 ATP campaign without the final title.
In his prime of 2022, Carlos Alcaraz won five singles titles. Titles included two Masters 1000 tournaments, Next Gen ATP Finals and the ATP 500 with victory at the Rio Open. And the last maiden Grand Slam title in the US Open 2022. Furthermore, he became the youngest ATP 500 winner by winning the 2022 Rio Open. Carlos Alcaraz started the 2022 season, ranking 32nd in the ATP rankings. However, the teenage tennis prodigy quickly rose through the ranks, ultimately taking the top spot in September. The best jump to No. 1 in more than 50 editions of the ATP rankings.
Thus, Carlos Alcaraz has become the first teenager in ATP history to end the season as Number 1. Furthermore, he is only the 18th to finish the season sitting at the top of the ranking.
